Recently I have been exploring ‘behavioural objects’. By this I mean how objects can be seen to act out in the environment, whether that is flashing lights, producing sound, or in my case of interest vibrating.
A lot of work is going on commercially to uncover the potential of Haptics. As early as 1995 the potential of haptics to convey information to the user was being researched. In recent times Apple and Disney Research have set-up dedicated programmes to explore the use of haptic feedback in smartphones and games respectively.
My initial research is steering away from the explicitly communicative to try and understand how vibrations can be understood in emotional, visual, poetic and sculptural sense.
